This proposal was discussed in the workshop during Phase 2 of the VGM. However, there was not enough time for this proposal to be voted on in plenary by the members during Phase 2. Therefore, this proposal will not be included in the ratification vote.
Proposal
Federal Council shall constitute an Energy Modelling Technical Task Force. This body’s membership will be composed of highly skilled energy modellers who will volunteer their time, and staffed by a full-time researcher who will guide GPC technical energy policy deliberations, development and strategy.
Objective
This directive seeks to professionalize the Green Party’s approach to developing coherent energy policies for Canada, in an effort to optimize the national resource mix. It will enable the party to have a clearer appreciation of the economic and technical impacts of policy measures, grounding the GPC’s energy policy development process.
Benefit
Time and resources are limited as we transition to a decarbonized economy. This proposed task force will help organize, streamline, refine and sharpen the GPC’s energy policy, in order to effectively lead on this cornerstone issue for our party.

As a response to the COVID pandemic, expert guidance can be seen to have provided the difference between effective and ineffective management across the globe. Where decisions on pandemic management have been politicized, efforts have proven to be less effective than when governments have followed technical direction. The climate emergency has much greater consequences than COVID, and the GPC will benefit from direct input from technical experts in order to better steer Canadian policy towards decarbonization.

I don't think this is the role of the Party. We have neither the expertise nor the resources. Dozens of highly qualified agencies are doing this already. In government we would direct the appropriate Ministries to do so. I agree that we members could all do with being better informed on energy policy and options. So a presentation by experts to a GM or other forums would be great. But we should be guided by the science and evidence, not setting out to do it ourselves.
I'm against this proposal (although I agree that energy is a cornerstone issue).
A task force is fraught with problems, like who to pick it and how much influence does it have? Green governance is the best kind because it gives members equal voice, which nurtures mutual respect and a bias to listening, learning and growth. I'm with Jason.
I am against this proposal as well because i know that the submitter of this motion is a proponent of nuclear energy. He submitted this motion from our riding so I heard the full background by the submitter about this motion and see this as being a backdoor way to get Party support for nuclear energy. He wants this Committee to "steer" energy policy, not the members. That is why he talks about depoliticizing energy policy by having this Committee deciding policy directly. This would bypass the views and values of our members.

I am against any policy, resolution that promotes secular energy or any part of it.
